When Structure Is Replaced By Power
Discipline has nothing to do with how you feel.
It is the ability to keep pushing even when every cell in your body wants you to stop.
The opposite is called motivation.
Consistency is not about the will or intention to be consistent.
It is about staying on track even when it comes at a cost.
The opposite is called inconsistency.
Structure is not about making decisions in the moment.
It is about having a pre-planned order that holds when the pressure builds up.
The opposite is chaos.
Rules are not value statements or aspirations.
They are constraints that apply regardless of person, mood or circumstance.
When they don’t, they are not rules. They are guidelines or recommendations.
It is not inherently problematic that people, organisations, or societies fail to be consistent or structured at times.
But responsibility without structure is bound to fail, and structure without responsibility is dangerous.
Real problems and injustice emerge when systems claim to be consistent and structured — often formalised as rules — while simultaneously justifying deviations through after-the-fact justifications that protect self-image and an illusion of order, rather than actual structure.
The result is a system in which no one truly knows what applies.
Not because rules are absent, but because they are interpreted and enforced selectively.
In practice, this reduces them to arbitrary guidelines that only apply when it feels convenient.
At that point, decision-making no longer serves structure or systematic problem-solving in pursuit of the common good.
Instead, it becomes a power contest:
Who shouts the loudest, whose feelings were hurt the most, whose values dominate the moment.
When structure collapses, it is not replaced by freedom. It’s replaced by an emotional power struggle:
Born out of fear, held together by leverage.
Driven by ego, sustained through manipulation.
Balanced by retaliation, protected through exclusion.
